Like in other US states, Powerball is among the most popular lottery games in Illinois. The IL State Lottery regularly organizes Powerball draws, giving the participants a chance to win massive prizes. Currently, the Powerball jackpot is $523,000,000. If you’re interested in learning how the game works and the odds of winning, read on.
How to Play IL Powerball
The rules of Illinois Powerball are plain and simple. Even if you’ve never tried it before, the guides below will help you understand how Powerball works. Fortunately, Illinois is one of the few US states that supports online and retail Powerball, so you can choose the option you prefer.
First, let’s see what playing Powerball in an Illinois Lottery retail parlor looks like:
- Visit your preferred IL Lottery store and buy a Powerball payslip.
- Choose five white ball numbers ranging from 1 to 69 and a red Powerball from 1 to 26.
- Pick several plays you’d like to participate in. The maximum is five, and each one costs $2.
- The payslip allows you to choose the number of consecutive draws to participate in. You can select up to 26 different drawings and play them with the numbers you’ve chosen already.
- The Powerball payslip also has a Power Play feature that can multiply the non-jackpot winnings 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, or 10x.
- After filling out the payslip, sign your name on the back and secure it.
- Follow the live results on the TV or check the official IL Lottery website for winning numbers.
However, if you want to play online, here’s what you need to do:
- Pick the number of tickets to purchase and then input the number of times you want to play each ticket.
- Choose five numbers from 1 to 69 and insert one red Powerball number from 1 to 26. The Quick Pick option can generate random numbers and fill out the payslip automatically.
- You can choose the Power Play feature and increase the non-jackpot prizes up to 10 times even while playing online.
- Once you've completed your tickets, review the details and confirm the purchase.
You can then follow the results on the official IL State Lottery website.
Powerball Drawing Schedule
The Illinois State Lottery organizes Powerball drawing three times a week. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, players get a chance to win the Powerball jackpot. The draw time always remains the same — 9:59pm.
If you want to participate in the game, you can buy tickets as late as 8:59pm on the night of the draw.
Payouts, Odds, and Rules
All you need to do to participate in the game is choose six random numbers — five white-balls from 1 to 69 and a red Powerball from 1 to 26. Of course, you can add the special features mentioned above and increase the odds of winning.
A person that hits all six numbers will collect the jackpot. A $1 million prize is reserved for all players who can predict five white-ball numbers. Additionally, seven other prizes await participants that match some of the combinations displayed in the table below:

5 WB + Red Powerball | Jackpot | 1:292,201,338.00 |

How to Claim Illinois Powerball Prizes
If you’re one of the lucky winners, there are a couple of things you need to know about claiming the prize:
- If you’ve won up to $600, you could collect the money at most lottery retail shops.
- If the reward goes above $600, you’ll have to visit the nearest lottery claim center.
- Prizes up to $25,000 can be paid out in claim centers on the same day, while those exceeding this amount will be paid out in four to six weeks.
- Powerball winners can choose to collect their prize in 30 annual instalments or go for a lump sum equal to the jackpot’s cash value.
