  • James Robinson: Caught up in roster cuts

    Rotowire

The Saints released Robinson on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.Robinson, who played only one game in 2023 and 11 contests in 2022, couldn't carve out a reserve role for himself behind Alvin Kamara in New Orleans' backfield despite Kendre Miller (hamstring) missing most of training camp and Jamaal Williams having been notably unproductive last season. Since suffering an Achilles tear back in 2021, Robinson has bounced between multiple organizations in the league. He'll look to earn another practice squad opportunity for the 2024 campaign, whether with the Saints or a new club.

  • Saints' James Robinson: Gets reserve/future deal with NO

    Rotowire

The Saints signed Robinson due to a reserve/future contract Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.Robinson is a four-year veteran with 2,264 career regular-season rushing yards to his name, though nearly half of those came in his rookie season in 2020. An Achilles tear suffered in Week 16 of 2021 derailed his once-promising career, and the Illinois State product has played in only 12 games over the past two seasons, spending almost all of 2023 on Green Bay's practice squad. Robinson joined New Orleans' practice squad in mid-December, and the organization apparently liked what they saw from him enough to want to give him a shot at making the roster next year, though it remains to be seen how much Robinson has left in the tank.

    Rotowire

The Packers elevated Robinson to their active roster Saturday, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.Green Bay will be without both Aaron Jones (knee) and Emanuel Wilson (shoulder) in Week 13, so Robinson's elevation will ensure depth at running back behind AJ Dillon and Patrick Taylor. Robinson's most recent action came in 2022 with the Jets and Jaguars, when he logged 476 total yards on 121 touches.

  • James Robinson: Joins Green Bay's practice squad

    Rotowire

Green Bay signed Robinson to its practice squad Tuesday.Since being cut by the Giants ahead of the regular season, Robinson had worked out for multiple teams before Green Bay opted to bring him aboard. The 25-year-old will begin his tenure with the Packers on the practice squad, but he could be promoted to the 53-man roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Broncos if Aaron Jones (hamstring) isn't healthy coming out of Green Bay's Week 6 bye. Robinson ran for 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns with the Jaguars as an undrafted rookie in 2020 but has struggled to recapture that form since tearing an Achilles' tendon late in the 2021 season.

    Rotowire

Robinson worked out with the Packers on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.Robinson visited the Packers on Monday, working out for a second team since being let go by the Giants in late August. The running back has struggled to find steady work over the last season-plus, appearing in 11 games with the Jaguars and Jets last year while compiling 425 rushing yards on 110 total carries. With Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon already in-house for the Packers, Robinson would likely have to earn his shot with the practice squad prior to being elevated to the active roster.

Jashaun Corbin started ahead of the veteran and scored the Giants' lone rushing touchdown Saturday. Robinson is currently one of several backs vying for one of New York's final roster spots ahead of the regular-season opener against the Cowboys on Sept. 10.

    Rotowire

Robinson (undisclosed) participated in Thursday's practice, Matt Citak of the Giants' official website reports.Robinson was cut by New England earlier in the offseason after was unable to stay healthy during OTAs. • James Robinson: Struggling to stay healthy

    Rotowire

Robinson struggled to stay healthy for spring practices prior to the Patriots waiving him Monday, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports. No specific injury is mentioned, but Robinson's career trajectory largely seems a product of the Achilles tear he suffered late in Dec. 2021 toward the end of his second season. The 2020 UDFA started 27 of his 28 games for Jacksonville prior to the severe injury, averaging 4.5 yards per carry and 65.6 rushing yards per game (plus 20.2 receiving yards). Robinson made it back for Week 1 of 2022 just nine months after the Achilles tear and had 263 total yards and four TDs over his first three games, but he struggled in the following weeks and was demoted to a backup role before being traded to New York, where he dealt with a knee injury and was a healthy scratch at times. Robinson then signed a two-year contract with the Patriots this March, only to be released three months later. That's not a great sign for his NFL future, though he's young enough (25 in August) that a rebound can't be entirely ruled out even if it doesn't happen this season. Robinson should get a shot with another team for training camp this summer.

  • Patriots' James Robinson: Gets two-year deal with New England

    Rotowire

Robinson agreed to a two-year contract with the Patriots on Wednesday, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.Robinson's deal can be worth up to $8 million with incentives. After bursting onto the scene with 1,847 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns across his first two professional seasons with Jacksonville, Robinson struggled during an injury riddled 2022 campaign, mustering just 425 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in 11 appearances between the Jaguars and Jets. He tore his Achilles late in the 2021 season and battled a knee injury in 2022, but the Patriots are hoping that Robinson will regain his pre-injury form while contributing to a backfield led by Rhamondre Stevenson.

Robinson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.Robinson continues to be the odd man out in the Jets' backfield, with Zonovan Knight and Michael Carter on track to lead the team's rushing attack Sunday, while Ty Johnson is on hand in a reserve capacity.

  • Jets' James Robinson: Four carries in Week 13

    Rotowire

Robinson rushed four times for 10 yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 27-22 loss to Minnesota.Michael Carter's absence due to an ankle injury paved the way for Robinson to suit up after he was a healthy scratch for the Jets' previous game, but the former Jacksonville running back still saw minimal usage. Zonovan Knight rushed 15 times for 90 yards in the lead role, demonstrating the type of tough running the Jets have been hoping for but have yet to see out of Robinson. Even if Carter remains out in Week 14 against the Bills, Robinson's usage will likely remain minimal.

  • Jets' James Robinson: Part of Week 13 committee

    Rotowire

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said Robinson is expected to be part of a three-man backfield committee Sunday against the Vikings that also includes Zonovan Knight and Ty Johnson, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. The Jets made Robinson a surprise healthy inactive ahead of last week's game against the Bears, with Michael Carter, Knight and Johnson serving as the team's backfield options in the 31-10 win. Carter suffered a low-ankle sprain in the second half of that contest and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game, and with the Jets already proceeding as though Carter will be out, Robinson will re-enter the mix as at least a No. 3 option. Because Knight (17 touches for 103 yards) and Johnson (six for 78) were efficient with their opportunities last week, it's reasonable to expect both to be ahead of Robinson in the pecking order for snaps in Week 13, even though Robinson has more experience as a lead back in the NFL.

  • Jets' James Robinson: Role uncertain moving forward

    Rotowire

Coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday that "no one has seen the last of" Robinson, though Saleh wouldn't commit to Robinson playing Sunday against the Vikings after the running back was scratched in the Week 12 win over the Bears, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.Undrafted rookie Zonovan Knight made his NFL debut with Robinson out of the picture last week, and Knight made the most of the opportunity with 103 scrimmage yards. The Jets may not have the option to use the same trio of Knight, Ty Johnson and Michael Carter from that 31-10 win over the Bears, as Carter's status against Minnesota is in doubt due to an ankle injury. If Carter sits out, Robinson would presumably re-enter the rotation. Robinson was surprised at the decision to scratch him, which likely resulted from his ineffectiveness since being acquired from Jacksonville via trade. As a member of the Jets, Robinson has averaged a modest 3.0 yards per carry while catching only two passes in three games played.

  • Jets' James Robinson: Healthy scratch against Bears

    Rotowire

Robinson is listed as inactive Week 12 against the Bears.Robinson was brought in as a mid-season acquisition following Breece Hall's season-ending knee injury, but he has yet to make much of an impact on the Jets offense. He'll now end up a healthy scratch, with Michael Carter set to lead the backfield and Ty Johnson set to serve as the primary backup. Rookie running back Zonovan Knight is also active for the contest.

  • Jets' James Robinson: RBs to Sit

    Rotowire

I don't love Robinson or Michael Carter in this matchup with the Patriots, but Carter has more appeal as a flex option given his role in the passing game. We saw how this played out two games ago when these team's met in Week 8. Carter had seven carries for 26 yards and four catches for 35 yards on seven targets. Robinson had five carries for 17 yards and no catches on one target. The Patriots have allowed two running backs to score against them this season, and it was David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert in the same game for the Bears. I don't expect Robinson or Carter to have a standout performance this week.
